The Cats Spirit returned

Calico Ghost cat

A year ago, my mother's 18 year old calico got sick and we had to put her to sleep.

She was the last cat we owned, and she followed me everywhere I went in the house while she lived. So much so, that she would fall asleep upstairs in my bedroom in the afternoons while I cross-stitched, and she would wake up in the evenings at 8 pm (you could hear her hitting the floor with a mighty THUD when she jumped off the bed) to come get me and try to put me to bed at night.

She was stubborn and she worked hard to put each of us to bed every night. I was amazed that such a little cat could make so much noise jumping off a bed and coming down the stairs. It was funny

A few months after she passed, I started hearing her jump off the bed at night while I watched TV in the den with Mom. (My bedroom is above the den). I didn't even have to look at the clock; I knew it was 8 pm. I didn't say anything, because I figured telling anyone that we were being haunted by a stubborn calico cat would probably have them thinking I was totally mad. Until one night, when Mom stopped what she was doing and turned to look at me, "Can't you hear that?" she asked.

I learned that Mom had been hearing it too. So now, it doesn't happen as often as it used to, but Scotch-cat still makes an effort to come for a visit every so often. We hear the THUD, and we both look up at the ceiling and smile. They're so comforting, those visits.

Ghost of Louie the cat

I used to work at a small options home where one of the residents had a cat. Unfortunately, when I arrived one night the poor cat had gotten run over by a car, and my residents were understandably distraught.

We all missed the presence of that companion, even us staff, so much so that we did our best to find a kitten for the house to help the residents heal. While we waited for permission to get another cat, I woke up one morning around 6 am, the sun shining in the staff room (we were on sleepover status in this home at night) and I lay there in bed trying to figure out what woke me. I knew that our residents didn't get up until 7:30 am.

I was laying there listening to the house trying to place what woke me when I heard the cat meowing. I thought at first it was outdoors, but then there was a pounce. I saw all four spots on the mattress where the paws ought to be, felt the weight of a cat, and watched in amazement as whatever it was walked up the bed beside me, before vanishing in mid stride.

I never actually SAW a cat, but I heard and felt one. The bedroom door was closed, the residents were all asleep at the time and there were no animals in the house with me. I took the opportunity to triple check the locks when I got up and the house was soundly locked up. I have no idea except that Louie missed us as much as we missed him, and he came by for a little visit.

I was honored he chose to visit me.
