A year ago, my mother's 18 year
old calico got sick and we had to put her to sleep.
She was the last cat we
owned, and she followed me everywhere I went in the house while she lived. So
much so, that she would fall asleep upstairs in my bedroom in the afternoons
while I cross-stitched, and she would wake up in the evenings at 8 pm (you
could hear her hitting the floor with a mighty THUD when she jumped off the
bed) to come get me and try to put me to bed at night.
She was stubborn and she
worked hard to put each of us to bed every night. I was amazed that such a
little cat could make so much noise jumping off a bed and coming down the
stairs. It was funny
A few months after she passed, I started hearing her jump
off the bed at night while I watched TV in the den with Mom. (My bedroom is
above the den). I didn't even have to look at the clock; I knew it was 8 pm. I
didn't say anything, because I figured telling anyone that we were being
haunted by a stubborn calico cat would probably have them thinking I was
totally mad. Until one night, when Mom stopped what she was doing and turned to
look at me, "Can't you hear that?" she asked.
I learned that Mom
had been hearing it too. So now, it doesn't happen as often as it used to, but
Scotch-cat still makes an effort to come for a visit every so often. We hear
the THUD, and we both look up at the ceiling and smile. They're so comforting,
those visits.
